Block

Materials

  • Assorted dark scraps (minimum size: 4 inches x 6 inches) totaling 2 yards
  • Assorted light scraps (minimum size: 3.5 inches square) totaling 2 yards
  • Assorted strips (size: 2.25 inches x 10 inches to 20 inches) totaling 31.2 inches when combined for binding
  • 5 5/8 yards of backing fabric
  • Batting measuring 68 inches x 98 inches

  • Basic sewing tools and supplies

Cutting The template is provided on the included pattern insert.

  1. Using the pattern on the insert, create a template for piece A. Cut 150 A pieces from assorted dark scraps.
  2. Cut 150 squares (3 1/8 inches) from assorted light scraps; then, cut each square in half diagonally, resulting in 300 B triangles.
  3. Cut 150 squares (4 5/8 inches) from assorted light scraps; similarly, cut each square in half diagonally, yielding 300 C triangles.

Completing the Blocks

Choose one A rectangle and two different fabric B and C triangles to assemble a single block.

Sew a B triangle to the opposite short ends of A, following Figure 1; press seams toward B.

Attach a C triangle to the opposite long sides of the A-B unit, completing one Scrappy Crossing block as illustrated in Figure 2; press seams toward C.

Repeat steps 1–3 to create a total of 150 Scrappy Crossing blocks.

Completing the Quilt

Select, arrange, and join 10 Scrappy Crossing blocks to form a block row using the Assembly Diagram; press seams consistently in one direction. Repeat this process to craft 15 block rows in total.

Connect the rows, alternating and matching seams, to finalize the quilt top, following the Assembly Diagram; press.

Assemble the quilt layers by sandwiching the batting between the pieced top and a prepared backing piece. Secure the layers together with pins or adhesive. Quilt the layers by hand or machine as per your preference.

Once quilting is finished, trim the batting and backing fabric to align with the raw edges of the pieced top.
Join the binding strips on the short ends to create a continuous strip; press seams open. Fold the binding strip with wrong sides together along its length and press.

Attach the binding to the quilt edges, mitering corners and overlapping ends. Fold the binding to the back side and stitch it in place to complete the quilt.
